OUR SDG COMMITMENT
THE REASON WHY THE GLOBAL GOALS ARE IMPORTANT.
The Sustainable Development goals replaced the Millennium Development Goals in 2015 when the UN decided that the MDGs did not have a strategic plan of action. The SDG’s were then developed in order to tackle the problems affecting the entire world, broken down into goals, targets and strategies, outlining the role of governments, institutions, non-profits and individuals. The goals were created when the UN realized that the leaders of the world have neglected some of the key issues that affect the fundamental needs of life of its people. It is important because the goals that need to be achieved are not strange to any human. It relates to us all, and just because others ignore them, doesn’t mean they are not there.
WHY IS THIS NOT JUST ANOTHER PROJECT?
This is not just another project that can end with a meeting or a closed file. Unlike former projects, the goals are not unimaginable. They are happening right now. Even though the level of progress can be tracked, it takes the passion of individuals to make meaningful changes in their communities.
WHY SHOULD YOUNG PEOPLE BE INTERESTED?
Young people should be interested because in 2030, millennials, gen 2 and all of the young people now will be at an age where they have begun to make decisions that affect our world. And if young people do not start now, the goals we have to achieve will stare us in the face later.
In YAO’s mission to the world, we strive to become global citizens. This is in line with our mobilization campaign to gather as many people to make sure we are actively taking part in the activities that bring us closer to achieving our goals.
SDG 1; No Poverty
End poverty of all forms
Under our charity projects, youth workers disperse to different parts of the country to homes orphanages and stay with the children, feeding them, taking care of them in collaboration with staff and stakeholders. Our goal is that we ensure that these children are being properly taken care of and that they do not go back to the streets where they will face extreme hardships and poverty. Each year, the organization has a major outreach under the Community Hope and Charity campaign where volunteers donate to communities and serve the community in a way that meets the needs of the community .
Youth Arise is actively focused on engagement in deprived communities, providing opportunities in entrepreneurial skills training to ensure members in these communities have the capacity to take care of themselves and their families through their small scale businesses and create economic growth, while breaking their children out of the cycle of poverty.
SDG 2; Zero Hunger
End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.
End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Each year we take on feeding projects in deprived communities. As part of contributing to zero hunger, Youth Arise Organization educates young people on food security as well
SDG3; Good Health And Well-being
Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
Youth Workers embark on trips to health centers, clinics and major hospitals in the country to serve as cleaners, office clerks, mock nurses, providing healthcare to patients while learning about statistics, what it takes to be a health worker and recording patient input. In 2020, the Youth Arise Organization established a health team, which organizes community outreaches and webinars to educate young people on the importance of good health and well being. We never overlooked SDG 3 in our quest to make the world a better place. Teaching young people about regenerative health is central to our activities.
SDG 4; Quality Education
Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
Education is the key to unlocking the vast potential of the human race. It is instrumental in providing a better life for people all over the world.
This is a major goal we contribute to. Youth work belongs to the area of ‘out-of-school’ education, as well as specific leisure time activities managed by professional or voluntary youth workers. We work on building the capacity of young people through training programs and encouraging the personal development of young people. In 2020, Youth Arise organized multiple capacity building programs.
These include Report writing, public advocacy, videography, leadership training and personal development seminars. Another approach of Youth Arise to contribute to this goal is The initiative that begins with a project where every year, a group of youth workers go to various schools around the country, teaching students and breaking them out into small cells and communicating with them to connect with them on a deeper level. The sessions are designed to gain a perspective on how their education level is growing and how they gain knowledge on new concepts every day.
SDG 5; Gender Equality
Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
At Youth Arise Organization, a key focus is empowering women through Capacity building and support programs by training in relevant skills they need to be the impact the world is waiting for, like vocational skills, managerial skills, leadership skills and entrepreneurial skills.
Over the years we have raised women leaders and enhanced their capacity as we strive to ensure equity .
SDG 6; Clean Water & Sanitation
Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
In contributing to SDG 6, volunteers are given the opportunity to make a difference to the quality of their natural environment – by cleaning up the street, planting trees, protecting our wildlife and working on community gardens
Sanitation is truly a growing problem in our country. The key to eradicating this completely is through changing of mind sets and instilling in our youth the power of Youth Work and discipline. We embark on trips to market centers, stations, and town squares to engage and sensitize the inhabitants on good sanitation and personal hygiene habits. Our projects are spear. headed towards creating a never ending movement of people who keep their environment, become advocates for their environment, and ensure that it is sustainable.
Clean up campaigns, goal oriented sensitization on the effects of poor sanitation, and active participation by the youth and non- profit organizations, will contribute to a better mindset on the importance of sanitation. Youth Arise will continue to advocate and partner with organizations on this fight to initiate a new change of heart and mind to this growing problem.
SDG 8; Decent work and economic growth
Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
We strive to find the entrepreneurial spirit in every young person through a capacity building program. Some great tips for helping in income generation is the right use of technology which is a great tool for change. Adding value to people by teaching simple income generation skills like vocational training in baking, sewing through internships developing social and corporate skills. We believe in creating the spaces where new ideas can thrive, and grant new hope and opportunities to people.
SDG 11; Sustainable cities and communities
Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Youth Arise Commits to building a model community that will reflect SDG 11 and partner with other communities to create sustainable communities.
SDG 16; Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
Youth Arise Organization advocates for young people and seeks to be a strong institution that will promote peaceful and sustainable development
SDG 17; Partnerships for the goals
Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development
Volunteering for non profit organizations, fostering peace by listening and learning from each other’s views ,and creating more opportunities where we can learn from each other. Youth Arise is partnering with other non- profits, educational institutions, scientists, experts in technology and innovation, and organizations interested in the development of young people.
OUR WAY FORWARD
The global goals are interlinked, and one isn’t possible without the other. The future for YAO is to liaise with institutions, sponsors, advocates to turn our projects into initiatives that have a life of their own; attracting volunteers and supporters to open themselves up to real discourse on these issues, and participating in a cause that will change their world. Geared towards empowering young people, Youth Arise projects continue to thrive because they are implemented by the youth, for the youth. We have one foot in each of these goals, as young people and volunteers, and our projects are tailored to achieve them.
GOALS WE INDIRECTLY CONTRIBUTE TO
We reach out to young people of every kind that have diverse interests and ways they can contribute to all the other SDGs we are not directly linked to but we will still ensure they make meaningful contributions to any goal to set their mind to. As they years progress we will officially contribute to all these goals
