Why We Need a Home: A Story from the field
When Audrey was 20, she made youth work her mission. But as someone who thrives on community and physical connection, she needed more than just a virtual space—she needed a place where like-minded people could gather, dream, and grow together. Here’s her story:
“In high school in Ghana, I longed for a community of people who thought like I did, who wanted more for themselves and for the world. That’s how I found Youth Arise. I didn’t know it would change my life. Since then, Youth Arise has been my compass—for purpose, for service, and for hope.
Now as a student at Smith College, I’m reminded every day how powerful it is to be surrounded by people who challenge and inspire you. At Youth Arise, our office was that space for many of us—a place where the future felt possible. But it’s small, barely fits 25 people,when the chairs and desks aren’t set up, and we never know when it’s open or who has the key. It’s hard to build a community like that.
As Youth Arise’s U.S.-based Resource Mobilization Officer, I often work virtually. But I miss being there—in the room, in the energy, in the dream.”
That’s why we’re building a permanent home for Youth Arise—a space where young people can gather freely, learn boldly, and be inspired daily. A space for youth workers to lead and for transformation to thrive.

Youth Arise has been my life’s work for the past 13 years. It began as a passion to mentor, to share what I had learned, and to give young people what I wished someone had given me—guidance, belief, and opportunity. From a magazine, to a radio show, to a registered nonprofit, Youth Arise has grown because young people kept showing up and telling us what they needed.
Over the years, I’ve seen different situations: students full of fire and ambition, and others weighed down by hopelessness. But I’ve learned that no matter where they start, every young person can rise when they are seen, heard, and supported. That’s what Youth Arise does. And it’s the incredible volunteers, mentors, and staff who make that possible.
Now, we’ve reached a turning point. We’ve operated with limited resources, rented spaces, and borrowed time. But the vision has grown and the need has too. It’s time for a permanent home: a hub for leadership, innovation, and mentorship. A space where youth workers can train, young leaders can create, and futures can be built with purpose.
Through our Building for Hope Challenge, we are raising $500,000 by December 2025 to construct that very space. With it, we can impact over 5,000 youth through consistent training, creative hubs, and innovation labs across Ghana.
If we’re serious about raising a generation of leaders, then we must create the space for them to lead.
